Peter Obi Dismisses Edo Governor Okpebholo’s Threat, Vows to Return for Philanthropy

Former Labour Party presidential candidate and ex-Anambra State Governor, Peter Obi, has firmly dismissed threats issued by Edo State Governor Monday Okpebholo regarding his safety, pledging to revisit Edo whenever he is needed to make philanthropic donations.

Obi Responds to Okpebholo’s Warning

Peter Obi addressed the media in Awka in reaction to Governor Okpebholo’s comments, which warned that the ex-governor’s security could not be guaranteed if he visited Edo State. Obi, present at Christ the King College (CKC), Onitsha, for a donation event, declared he is undaunted by such threats:

  • He noted he receives threats frequently across Nigeria but remains unfazed.
  • Obi stated, “Threats don’t make any meaning to me. I receive threats everyday… I will not be afraid.”
  • He reaffirmed his commitment to making donations in Edo, especially when needed to support public good.

Focus on Philanthropy, Not Politics

Emphasizing philanthropy over politics, Obi highlighted his recent N50 million donation to CKC Onitsha. He revealed that the contribution was made in partnership with other alumni to address the school’s need for improved staff quarters and administrative facilities. Obi used the occasion to encourage:

  • Investment in schools and society by those with verifiable and honest sources of wealth.
  • Acts of generosity and empowerment as tools to lift people from poverty and develop communities.
  • Public officials such as Governor Okpebholo to “complement what I was doing in [his] state instead of threatening me.”

Continual Commitment to Education

Obi signaled an ongoing commitment to supporting education and health across Nigeria, revealing scheduled donations in multiple locations over the coming days. He underscored the importance of investing in people, stating that building human capacity is essential for national progress.

Despite recent political tensions and open warnings from Governor Okpebholo, Peter Obi has made it clear he will not be deterred from his philanthropic mission in Edo or anywhere else in Nigeria. He called on all leaders and citizens to prioritize investments in education and community development, minimizing political distractions for the greater good.
