University of Port Harcourt Immortalizes Nyesom Wike, Names Ultra-Modern Convocation Arena After Him


The University of Port Harcourt (UNIPORT) has honored Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, by naming its ultra-modern convocation arena after him. The arena, which was built in 2023 under Wike’s initiative, was officially inaugurated during the university’s 50th Anniversary and 35th Convocation ceremony held on July 26, 2025.

The acting Governor of Rivers State, Ibok Ibas, led the inauguration, celebrating Wike’s significant contributions to the development of the university’s infrastructure. This naming is a symbolic recognition of Wike’s impact on advancing educational facilities and his broader role in public service.

During the convocation event, Wike also received an honorary doctorate degree, underlining the university’s appreciation for his dedication to education and community development. The convocation marked a milestone in UNIPORT's history, blending tradition with modernity, and the new arena is expected to serve as a world-class venue for academic ceremonies and other significant events.

This development reflects the university’s commitment to upgrading its infrastructure and recognizes leaders who have played pivotal roles in these advancements.
