The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has reported a remarkable initial response to its nationwide Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise, with a total of 69,376 prospective voters pre-registering online within just seven hours of the registration portal going live.
Speaking in a statement on Monday, Sam Olumekun, INEC’s Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, said the registration portal was opened at 8:30 am and had recorded nearly seventy thousand pre-registrations by 3:30 pm the same day.
Among the registrants, 33,803 (48.7%) are male, while 35,573 (51.3%) are female. Notably, 48,033 registrants, representing 69.2%, are young people between the ages of 18 and 34, showcasing strong youth participation in the electoral process.
INEC announced that the online portal will remain available 24 hours a day, seven days a week at https://cvr.inecnigeria.org, allowing Nigerians to register at their convenience.
For those who prefer physical registration, INEC will commence in-person registration starting Monday, August 25, 2025, at 811 State and Local Government offices nationwide. The in-person option will be available weekdays from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm, running simultaneously with online registration throughout the CVR exercise.
The commission also stressed that only Nigerian citizens aged 18 years and above who are not already registered voters are eligible to register. Any form of double or multiple registration is illegal, though transfers between polling units and replacement of lost or damaged voter cards will be permitted during the CVR.
INEC has pledged to provide weekly updates on the CVR progress, including detailed demographic breakdowns by state, gender, age, occupation, and disability status, ensuring transparency and public engagement.
This continuous registration period is designed to allow Nigerians who missed previous registration exercises the opportunity to become eligible voters ahead of the 2027 general elections, thereby strengthening the democratic process.
