President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved a substantial subsidy to reduce the cost of kidney dialysis treatment in federal hospitals across Nigeria, providing significant relief to thousands of Nigerians living with kidney-related diseases.

According to Daniel Bwala, the Special Adviser to the President on Policy Communication, the price of each dialysis session has been drastically reduced from ₦50,000 to just ₦12,000, representing a 76 percent cut in cost.

“With this intervention, the price of each dialysis session has been reduced from ₦50,000 to just ₦12,000, bringing relief to many Nigerians battling kidney-related illnesses,” Bwala announced on Monday.

The subsidy has been implemented in ten major federal medical centers and teaching hospitals nationwide, including:

  • Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Ebute-Metta, Lagos
  • Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Jabi, Abuja
  • University College Hospital (UCH), Ibadan
  • Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Owerri
  • University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital (UMTH), Maiduguri
  • Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Abeokuta
  • Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH), Lagos
  • Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Azare
  • University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH), Benin
  • University of Calabar Teaching Hospital (UCTH), Calabar

Plans are underway to expand this subsidized rate to additional federal hospitals across the country before the end of the year, with the goal of widening access to affordable dialysis nationwide.

Kidney disease is a growing health concern in Nigeria, often caused by factors such as contaminated food, synthetic products, and fake drugs. Chronic kidney disease progresses silently and can lead to kidney failure, necessitating dialysis or a kidney transplant for survival. The reduction in dialysis costs will therefore greatly improve access to life-saving treatment for thousands of Nigerians.

This latest initiative builds on President Tinubu’s recent health policies, including the approval of free cesarean sections in federal hospitals to boost maternal healthcare and reduce preventable maternal deaths nationwide.

The reduction in dialysis costs is expected to ease the financial burden on patients and families struggling with kidney disease, marking a major step forward in Nigeria’s healthcare delivery.
