The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Lagos State has stated unequivocally that former President Goodluck Jonathan cannot unseat the current President Bola Tinubu if he decides to run for the presidency in 2027. The Lagos APC spokesman, Seye Oladejo, made this declaration amid growing speculation about Jonathan’s potential return to the political arena.
While acknowledging Jonathan’s role in the peaceful democratic transition of 2015, Oladejo emphasized that Nigeria has moved beyond nostalgic politics centered on sentiment or symbolism. He argued that the challenges facing Nigeria today require bold, capable, and forward-looking leadership, which he implied Tinubu represents. “Good luck alone is not a governance strategy,” Oladejo stated.
Highlighting the challenges left behind by the Jonathan administration (2010-2015), such as unchecked corruption and insecurity, the APC spokesman also noted the constitutional complexities and political instability that a Jonathan candidacy might trigger. With Jonathan reportedly engaging across party lines and not fully involved in the PDP’s rebuilding efforts, questions remain about his political loyalty and clarity of vision.
The APC maintained its focus on consolidating its gains, implementing reforms, and presenting fresh candidates who reflect Nigeria’s youthful aspirations. The party’s message is clear: Tinubu is firmly positioned for re-election, and any attempt by Jonathan to unseat him faces significant obstacles.
This stance comes as debates intensify around the 2027 presidential election, with the PDP reportedly considering Jonathan among potential candidates. However, the APC’s dismissal underscores the competitive political landscape ahead.
