The Federal Government of Nigeria has announced plans to commence fresh cash transfers to 2.2 million households across the country, with the scheme having disbursed a total of N419 billion so far.

Minister of State for Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction, Tanko Sununu, revealed this update during an interview on Channels Television on Monday. He stated that the new round of cash transfers is expected to begin before the end of August 2025.

Sununu explained that the government’s conditional cash transfer program targets vulnerable Nigerians identified through the National Social Safety-Net Coordinating Office’s (NASSCO) national social register, focusing on those within the lowest economic strata.

“In the next few days to come, before the end of August, we are going to reach out to 2.2 million households,” the minister said.

To date, the program has disbursed N419 billion to nearly five million Nigerians, with 71 percent of beneficiaries residing in the northern part of the country and 21 percent in the southern regions.

The Federal Government’s rapid conditional cash transfer initiative aims to alleviate poverty and provide financial support to the most vulnerable segments of Nigerian society. The program has been implemented in phases and is coordinated with transparency and data verification mechanisms.

The new tranche of disbursements will continue building on this effort, further extending economic aid to vulnerable households nationwide.
