FCT Minister Nyesom Wike has criticized former Minister of Transportation and presidential aspirant Rotimi Amaechi’s bold claim that he would eradicate corruption in Nigeria within one month if elected president. Wike described the promise as “deceitful” and questioned how Amaechi could make such a claim given his past record.
Wike was quoted saying, “A man who, as governor, refused to allow the judiciary to operate for almost two years now claims he can fight corruption in one month. How can that be possible?” The governor’s comment highlights skepticism about Amaechi’s ability to deliver on such a sweeping pledge.
Amaechi, who is running on the African Democratic Congress (ADC) platform, had vowed that if he failed to eliminate corruption in his first month in office, he would resign. Amaechi also pledged constitutional amendments and structural reforms aimed at tackling corruption effectively.
Critics like Wike argue that corruption in Nigeria is deeply entrenched and cannot be uprooted through quick political promises. They stress that genuine anti-corruption efforts require sustained institutional reforms, legal enforcement, and political will backed by experience.
Wike’s critique is part of a broader debate within Nigerian politics over the feasibility of immediate anti-corruption triumphs promised by aspiring leaders and the challenges inherent in reforming systemic governance failures.
