Babachir Lawal, the former Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), stated in a recent interview on Channels Television's Politics Tonight that based on the facts and data available to him, Peter Obi actually won the 2023 Nigerian presidential election. Lawal expressed his belief that the official result, which declared Bola Tinubu the winner, was altered and not reflective of the true votes counted at polling units monitored by his team.
He explained that their monitoring and data collection showed clear points where results were modified, and that Obi won by a significant margin in many areas, including over 90% of the vote in his strongholds. Lawal also criticized Tinubu’s conduct and governance style, describing him as "full of himself" and expressed that if he were part of Tinubu’s government, he would have resigned, citing nepotism and exclusion within the administration.
While Lawal acknowledged that the courts upheld Tinubu’s victory legally, he maintained that the technical and monitored evidence indicated otherwise. This revelation adds to the ongoing political discourse around the legitimacy and controversies surrounding the 2023 election outcomes.
