Former Nigerian Senator Ibrahim Musa Kontagora, who represented Niger North Senatorial District from 2011 to 2015, has died in Abuja following a medical emergency. He passed away at Nizamiye Hospital after the facility reportedly declined to perform a critical surgery because he was unable to pay the full $30,000 bill upfront. Kontagora was only able to pay $15,000 at the time, and hospital officials insisted on full payment before proceeding.
Despite efforts from his family and contributions from Niger State Governor Mohammed Bago and others to raise the remaining balance, the surgery did not take place in time. A hospital spokesperson confirmed the policy requiring full payment before treatment but did not take responsibility for the tragedy.
The Niger State Government expressed deep sorrow over Kontagora's death, acknowledging his legacy of dedicated service. The former senator was buried according to Islamic rites at the National Mosque in Abuja.
This incident highlights critical issues around healthcare access and payment policies in Nigerian private hospitals, sparking public debate on medical ethics and emergency care protocols.
