Israeli Security Cabinet Meets to Discuss Expansion of Gaza Operations Amid Rising Humanitarian Crisis

On August 7, 2025, the Israeli Security Cabinet convened to deliberate on possible expansion of military operations in the Gaza Strip. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu reportedly seeks approval for plans potentially involving full occupation of Gaza, targeting areas not yet under Israeli control. Current Israeli forces are estimated to control about 75% of Gaza.

The proposed plan includes evacuation orders for up to 1 million residents of Gaza City to facilitate military advances toward central camps where Hamas remains active. Alternative military strategies discussed include encircling Gaza City to apply heavy firepower while avoiding dangerous urban operations that could jeopardize Israeli troops and the lives of approximately 50 hostages believed held by Hamas.

Netanyahu emphasized that while Israel intends to control Gaza for security reasons, the country does not want to govern the territory permanently. The goal is to establish a security perimeter and eventually transfer governance to Arab forces capable of ensuring Israeli security without perpetuating Hamas rule.

The escalating conflict has led to dire humanitarian consequences, with the World Health Organization reporting unprecedented acute malnutrition among Gaza’s children and rising hunger-related deaths. Over 60,000 people are estimated to have died during the assault.

Aid organization Doctors Without Borders condemned systemic violence against civilians at Gaza humanitarian sites, labeling some aid efforts as "orchestrated killing," and calling for immediate cessation of these practices.

Meanwhile, families of hostages held in Gaza protest against the occupation plans, fearing for the captives’ safety. Israeli military leadership has warned that expanded operations could endanger hostages and further strain military resources.

This Security Cabinet meeting occurs amid intense international pressure and ongoing diplomatic efforts, with calls for urgent humanitarian aid and peaceful resolution.
