Enugu State Governor Peter Mbah has inaugurated five ultramodern transport terminals and launched a fleet of 100 Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) buses, marking a major milestone in overhauling the state’s public transportation system. The terminals, located across Enugu at Holy Ghost Terminals 1 and 2, Nsukka, Abakpa Nike, and Gariki, include state-of-the-art facilities such as food courts, banking halls, motels, shops, CNG refilling stations, and cinemas. The Holy Ghost Terminals are connected by Nigeria’s longest sky bridge, offering seamless transit access.
Governor Mbah described the project as transformational, aimed at reducing traffic chaos, improving economic growth, and enhancing the quality of life for over seven million residents. He highlighted the integrated transport system as a multi-modal solution connecting road, rail, air, and waterways into an efficient, safe network. The new transport management system uses digital e-ticketing to ensure transparency, eliminate revenue leakages, and provide commuters with greater convenience.
This initiative is expected to create up to 20,000 jobs spanning bus rapid transit (BRT), hybrid city taxis, airport operations, ride-hailing, and support services, boosting Enugu’s economy from $4.4 billion to an ambitious $30 billion. The CNG buses, equipped with free Wi-Fi and modern security features, promise affordable, eco-friendly urban mobility tailored especially along school and market routes.
Governor Mbah also acknowledged President Bola Tinubu’s support, including the recent concession of Akanu Ibiam International Airport, which will bolster Enugu’s position as an aviation and economic hub. The innovative program has been lauded by industry experts for its scale and ambition, positioning Enugu as a pioneering model for modern governance, sustainable urban growth, and dignified public services across Africa.
