Nigerian midfielder Kelechi Nwakali is set to leave English League One side Barnsley FC during the current transfer window, following disciplinary issues related to his late return from holidays in Nigeria.
Barnsley’s head coach Conor Hourihane confirmed the midfielder will be allowed to leave the club, stating, “Yes, that’s the plan.” The 26-year-old has been absent from the team since resuming late for the new season’s preparations, an act that led to his banishment from first-team training.
Since missing the pre-season schedule, Nwakali has been omitted from squads for matches against Plymouth Argyle, Burton Albion, Fleetwood Town, and Bolton Wanderers, further fueling speculation on his status at the club.
Nwakali’s disciplinary record has raised concerns, with a similar incident previously leading to his sacking by Spanish side SD Huesca in 2022. His career, notably marked by his stellar youth performances he won the Golden Ball at the 2015 FIFA U17 World Cup has been marred by such off-field issues.
However, recent reports of Nwakali being outright sacked by Barnsley have been disputed by his camp. His elder brother, Allwell Nwakali, refuted claims of termination, revealing that legal action may be pursued against sources spreading false information. He noted that while Barnsley intends to keep him contracted, Kelechi is seeking a loan move to get more regular playing time. Multiple clubs have reportedly shown interest in the midfielder.
Despite the ongoing saga, Nwakali's talent remains unquestioned; he made 26 appearances and won Barnsley’s Goal of the Month award in December 2024 during his debut season.
