Lagos Records 8,692 Domestic and Sexual Violence Cases in One Year, Reinforces Zero Tolerance Policy

The Lagos State Government has revealed that between August 2024 and July 2025, a total of 8,692 cases of domestic and sexual violence were reported across the state. Domestic violence accounted for the majority of these cases, with 3,685 incidents recorded during this period. Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Lawal Pedro, SAN, announced these figures during a press briefing marking the start of the 2025 Domestic and Sexual Violence Awareness Month.

The detailed breakdown includes 243 cases of defilement, 244 cases of child abuse and physical assault, 99 cases of rape, 48 cases of sexual harassment, and 25 cases of sexual assault by penetration. In addition, 726 family-related disputes, 41 cases of cyber harassment, and 32 cases involving threats to life were documented. Notably, children exposed to domestic violence numbered 3,090, with ages ranging from 18 months to 79 years, emphasizing that sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV) affects all age groups.

The government has secured over 140 convictions in related cases and obtained six restraining orders. Survivors of sexual assault have accessed free medical care, with 30 individuals accommodated in government shelters. Rehabilitation efforts also extended to 1,487 survivors and 249 perpetrators who underwent therapy, while specialized support was provided to 13 persons with disabilities.

Local government areas with the highest reported adult-related cases include Alimosho, Eti-Osa, Ikorodu, Kosofe, and Oshodi-Isolo; for child-related cases, Ikorodu, Kosofe, Badagry, Alimosho, and Oshodi-Isolo topped the list.

The theme for this year’s Domestic and Sexual Violence Awareness Month is “SGBV… It Concerns Us All.” Activities planned include public servants wearing purple ribbons in solidarity starting September 1, an advocacy walk, a market fiesta to sensitize residents on gender roles and stereotypes, a Survivor’s Day to honor victims, and the Governor’s Commendation and Awards Night to recognize champions in the fight against SGBV.

Lagos State’s firm stance on zero tolerance to sexual and gender-based violence reflects its commitment to protecting vulnerable populations and fostering a safer community for all.
