Authorities in Tshwane, South Africa, have commenced the demolition of two high-rise complexes owned by Nigerian property developer George Asaba following a series of court rulings that declared the buildings unlawful. The complexes, located on Luttig Street in Pretoria West, were ordered for removal by the Gauteng High Court in March after being deemed unsafe and in violation of zoning and safety regulations.
The court found that Asaba failed to submit approved building plans for the projects, describing the structures as a health hazard and illegal. Despite Asaba’s claims that his architect submitted plans, the court ruled this was an attempt to circumvent required approvals. His appeal against the demolition was dismissed in April, and he was held in contempt of court for disregarding a July 16, 2024 order that halted construction activities.
Tshwane’s Mayoral Committee Member for Corporate and Shared Services, Kholofelo Morodi, lauded the ruling as a significant victory in combating unlawful developments. She emphasized that illegal buildings, land grabs, and property hijackings have long compromised service delivery and public safety in the city. The demolitions are part of a broader campaign by Tshwane’s multiparty coalition government to reclaim urban spaces and enforce compliance with building regulations.
The city confirmed that demolitions of illegal structures will continue as part of ongoing efforts to uphold the rule of law and enhance urban safety. George Asaba has been ordered to cover the costs of the demolition.
