Nigeria’s Federal Ministry of Education Completes Comprehensive Curriculum Overhaul for Basic, Senior Secondary, and Technical Schools

The Federal Ministry of Education in Nigeria has officially announced the completion of a major review of the educational curricula across basic, senior secondary, and technical schools nationwide. This landmark reform, aimed at reducing content overload and enhancing practical learning, marks a significant step toward preparing Nigerian students with the skills needed to thrive in the 21st century.

Collaborating with key agencies such as the Nigerian Educational Research and Development Council (NERDC), Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC), National Senior Secondary Education Commission (NSSEC), and the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE), the Ministry's initiative ensures the curricula better reflect contemporary educational standards and national development needs.

Revised guidelines specify a streamlined subject load in each education stage, such as 9-10 subjects for early primary pupils, 12-14 for junior secondary, and an emphasis on technical and vocational skills at the senior secondary and technical school levels. This strategy focuses on deeper skill acquisition with an 80% practical and 20% theoretical learning balance.

Minister of State for Education, Professor Suwaiba Said Ahmad, highlighted the government’s commitment to implementing the curricula alongside robust teacher training and modern digital teaching aids, including potential AI support systems, to elevate teaching quality nationwide.

The curriculum overhaul is part of broader educational reforms designed to address learning crises and close gaps between academic knowledge and workplace competencies. Stakeholders expect this dynamic, skill-based approach to produce graduates better equipped for employment, entrepreneurship, and national development.
