On August 11, 2025, the Ogun State government sealed off Asoludero Court, the Conference Hotels, and its annex located in the Sagamu Government Reserved Area properties owned by former governor and current senator Gbenga Daniel. The sealing followed a notice to quit issued three days earlier, citing violations of the Ogun State Urban and Regional Planning and Development Law No. 61 of 2022 and its subsidiary regulations. According to official statements, the buildings lack the required permits and proper setbacks, breaching planning rules. The government posted fresh sealing and demolition notices on the properties with a three-day ultimatum to remove the contravention or face demolition.
Officials from the Ogun State Planning and Development Permit Authority arrived in government-branded vehicles and conducted the operation quickly, avoiding interaction with occupants and posting the notices after journalists left. The actions occurred amid rising political tensions between Governor Dapo Abiodun, who is eyeing the Ogun East senatorial seat in the 2027 elections, and Gbenga Daniel, the incumbent senator from the same district. A large campaign poster supporting Abiodun's senatorial bid was reportedly placed opposite Daniel’s mansion, escalating rivalry perceptions.
Gbenga Daniel has accused Governor Abiodun of using the new urban planning law as a political tool to target his properties unlawfully, insisting the buildings were legally constructed before the law came into effect, and decried the move as politically motivated and lacking due process.
The Ogun State government and the planning authority maintain that the enforcement is based on demonstrable planning contraventions, emphasizing adherence to the law.
This development highlights the intersection of urban planning enforcement and escalating political rivalry in Ogun State ahead of the 2027 elections.
