PDP in Kwara Urges Labour Leaders to Demand Higher Minimum Wage from Governor Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq

The Kwara State Chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has challenged labour leaders in the state to push for an upward review of the current minimum wage of N70,000, which they described as "lifeless." The call was made amid ongoing discussions around workers’ welfare and minimum wage policy in Kwara State.

The PDP expressed dissatisfaction with the existing N70,000 minimum wage, which was approved and implemented by Governor Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq starting October 2024. The party urged organised labour in Kwara to advocate for a revised, more livable wage that reflects the economic realities faced by public servants and workers across the state.

Labour unions in Kwara have been actively involved in negotiations with the state government regarding wage adjustments and payment structures. Labour leaders have historically demanded improvements on the minimum wage and consequential adjustments for both workers and pensioners.

The PDP’s demand aligns with broader national debates on wage reforms and workers’ rights, emphasizing the need for a minimum wage that adequately supports workers’ cost of living. The party called on labour unions to exercise their mandate boldly and secure better pay for the workforce.

Governor Abdulrazaq’s administration previously faced challenges such as payroll fraud and data verification issues impacting timely wage and pension payments, but the government remains committed to sustaining economically viable remuneration policies.
