Former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has urged his supporters to back candidates of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in the forthcoming bye-elections scheduled for August 16, 2025. Obi made this announcement via a post on his official X (Twitter) handle, explaining that supporters should refrain from voting for the Labour Party due to its ongoing internal crisis and the subsequent lack of recognition of Labour Party candidates by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
Obi stressed that because the Labour Party does not have recognized candidates on the INEC platform in the upcoming elections across 16 states, he is calling on his followers, including members of the Obidient and COPDEM families, to support the ADC candidates in their respective states.
This strategic move highlights a political realignment as Obi's influence extends beyond the Labour Party framework, showing growing cooperation with opposition coalitions and alternative platforms ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 general elections.
The bye-elections will feature contests for two senatorial seats, five Federal House of Representatives seats, and nine State Assembly seats across various states, making voter direction crucial in shaping the political balance.
Obi’s endorsement of the ADC candidates marks a clear tactical decision aiming to consolidate opposition strength and navigate the challenges posed by Labour Party’s internal disarray, ensuring his political movement remains relevant and impactful in Nigeria’s evolving political landscape.
