Three Seminarians Abducted in Edo State, Police Intensify Rescue Efforts

The Edo State Police Command is intensifying operations to rescue three seminarians kidnapped from the Immaculate Conception Minor Seminary in Ivianokpodi-Agenebode, Etsako East Local Government Area. The abduction occurred during an armed attack on July 11, 2025, which also resulted in the death of a Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) officer.

Police spokesperson Moses Yamu confirmed that Commissioner of Police Monday Agbonika is personally leading the rescue efforts. Specialized units, including the Anti-Kidnapping Squad and Tactical Teams, have been deployed, with a new Tactical Division established in the Ivieukwa community to enhance security and intelligence gathering.

The police are collaborating with other security agencies and using advanced technical intelligence and coordinated operations to ensure the safe release of the seminarians. The community and the Catholic Diocese of Auchi have been reassured that every possible measure is being taken.

This attack is the second on the seminary within a year, following a previous abduction of the institution’s rector, Father Thomas Oyode, who was released after 11 days in captivity. The ongoing kidnappings highlight a growing security challenge facing religious institutions in Nigeria.

The police pledged to keep the public updated as efforts continue.
