Cooking Gas Prices Surge by 44.5% in One Year, NBS Data Reveals

Nigerian households are grappling with a steep 44.5% increase in the price of cooking gas over the past year, according to the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS). The NBS Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) Price Watch Report for July 2025 shows that the cost of refilling a 12.5 kg cylinder soared from ₦14,261.57 in July 2024 to ₦20,609.48 in July 2025, marking a significant rise in energy expenses for many families.

This surge contrasts with July 2024 when there was a 9.37% drop in cooking gas prices from ₦15,736.27 in June 2024 to ₦14,261.57. The government’s move in October 2024 to halt export of locally produced gas aimed to increase domestic availability and curb rising prices. Despite this, prices have continued to climb sharply.

The NBS report indicates a slight month-on-month relief in July 2025, with prices easing by 1.91% from ₦21,010.56 in June 2025 to ₦20,609.48, though experts caution this minor drop may not signal a sustained price reduction.

Smaller households using 5 kg cylinders also experienced price hikes, with costs rising by 37.98% year-on-year to ₦8,243.79 in July 2025. Regional variations remain, with Adamawa, Rivers, and Taraba states recording some of the highest prices, while Yobe, Niger, and Nasarawa had the lowest.

The highest average prices for both cylinder sizes were reported in the South-South zone, reflecting supply and demand challenges in different regions.
