The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has publicly endorsed the All Progressives Congress (APC) chairmanship candidate for the Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC), Christopher Maikalangu, ahead of the 2026 council elections. Maikalangu, who defected from the People's Democratic Party (PDP) earlier in 2025, is seeking re-election for a second term.
Wike made the endorsement during the flag-off ceremony for the construction of a 7-kilometre road with four-span bridges linking Tunga Madaki and eight neighbouring communities. This infrastructure project is part of President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda and a response to the communities' long-standing demands following their land contributions for the expansion of the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport's second runway.
Highlighting the significance of government performance, Wike urged residents to reciprocate with electoral support for the APC candidate, emphasizing that the road, scheduled for completion by June 2026, will spur development in the previously neglected areas. The minister challenged the community to reflect on previous leadership that failed to address their infrastructure needs and encouraged voting for the party that has delivered tangible progress.
Campaigns for the FCT Area Council elections have officially begun, and Wike’s backing is seen as a strong endorsement of the APC’s grassroots strategy in the Federal Capital Territory.
