Buba Galadima, a chieftain of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), has issued a grave warning that Nigeria could face civil unrest if the federal government proceeds with an alleged plan to appoint a retired Court of Appeal judge, described by Galadima as “notorious,” as chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
Speaking on Arise Television’s Prime Time programme, Galadima expressed serious concerns about the credibility of Nigeria’s electoral system should the appointment go ahead.
He said, “Come November, there are rumors all over the place that this government is nominating a just retired Court of Appeal judge who is known for notoriety to be the chairman of INEC. I wish it is not true. Because if that man becomes the chairman of INEC, be rest assured that this government is inviting a civil war in this country.”
Galadima accused the current administration of disrespecting the rule of law and claimed that INEC, under its current leadership, has already been compromised in favor of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
“The INEC chairman has already rigged the election for APC. They brought somebody who is the secretary of the party that went to court for APC as acting national chairman, and he was rewarded with chairman of INEC,” Galadima alleged.
He warned that appointing this retired judge as INEC chairman would effectively undermine the nation’s electoral process and plunge the country into chaos.
Galadima urged Nigerians to remain vigilant and to prevent individuals with questionable records from overseeing Nigeria’s democratic processes.
