Cyclone Montha Brings Heavy Rains and Strong Winds to India’s Eastern Coast

Cyclone Montha, a severe cyclonic storm, made landfall on India’s east coast near Kakinada, Andhra Pradesh, on October 28, 2025, bringing torrential rains and powerful winds up to 110 km/h (68 mph). The storm formed over the west-central Bay of Bengal and gradually intensified as it moved north-northwestwards at a speed of about 12-15 km/h.

Authorities in Andhra Pradesh and neighboring states issued red alerts the highest level of weather warnings for 19 districts expected to bear the brunt of the cyclone's impact. In preparation, schools were closed, and over 70,000 people were evacuated from vulnerable low-lying and coastal areas, including more than 1,900 relief camps and 364 schools used as shelters.

The cyclone caused widespread damage, including the collapse of trees and power lines, disrupting electricity and damaging over 38,000 hectares of farmland in Andhra Pradesh alone. A fatality was reported when strong winds uprooted a palm tree onto a woman in the Konaseema district.

Heavy rainfall and gusty winds were also reported in neighboring states such as Odisha, Tamil Nadu, Telangana, Kerala, Karnataka, and West Bengal, although less severe compared to Andhra Pradesh.

The Indian Meteorological Department predicted that Cyclone Montha would weaken into a deep depression later on October 29, but authorities remain vigilant to ongoing flood risks and necessary recovery efforts. Meanwhile, weather fluctuations linked to the cyclone caused unusual snowfall on the Tibetan side of Mount Everest, leading to temporary climbing restrictions.

Cyclone Montha’s landfall was met with widespread government response to mitigate damage and ensure public safety, showcasing the region's emergency preparedness against climate-induced disasters.
