ISWAP Attacks Military Base in Borno, Many Soldiers Reportedly Killed

Fighters from the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) launched a deadly attack on a Nigerian military base in Borno State, resulting in numerous soldiers reportedly killed and several others injured. The assault forms part of ISWAP’s ongoing offensive in the northeastern region, where the group has increased its attacks on military installations to consolidate territorial control.

The military base, located in a strategic area within Borno, was overwhelmed during the surprise assault. ISWAP utilized complex tactics, including improvised explosive devices (IEDs) and coordinated raids, to strike crucial Nigerian army positions. Eyewitness reports indicate heavy casualties among the military personnel.

ISWAP’s campaign in 2025 has grown in intensity, with repeated attacks on military outposts disrupting government operations and forcing thousands of civilians to flee their homes. The group has exploited logistical weaknesses in isolated bases, damaging critical infrastructure and seizing weapons.

Borno State Governor Babagana Zulum and federal military officials have condemned the attack, promising intensified counter-insurgency measures. However, the recent surge in ISWAP violence highlights ongoing challenges faced by Nigerian security forces in regaining full control of the troubled northeast.
