Dangote Petroleum Refinery has officially commenced construction for its expansion project, aiming to increase its processing capacity from the current 650,000 barrels per day to 1.4 million barrels per day. This upgrade will surpass India’s Jamnagar Refinery and make it the largest single-train refinery in the world.
Alhaji Aliko Dangote, President of the Dangote Group, disclosed this in a press conference held in Lagos, supported by key figures including Mr. Femi Otedola, Chairman of First Bank. The project, set to be completed within three years, signals strong confidence in Nigeria’s economic future and Africa’s industrial potential.
Dangote acknowledged President Bola Tinubu and the Federal Government for their policies supporting industrialization efforts, including Nigeria First policy, Naira-for-crude policy, and the One-stop Shop initiative, which have revolutionized the downstream sector.
The expansion will create about 65,000 jobs during construction and increase polypropylene production from 900,000 metric tonnes to 2.4 million metric tonnes annually. It also aims to produce Euro VI-standard fuels, aligning with global environmental and emission regulations, as well as increase power generation capacity for operational efficiency.
Beyond refining oil, the project represents a broader industrial transformation, creating new opportunities in petrochemicals and base oils production, emphasizing domestic processing and export of finished petroleum products.
“This expansion reflects our confidence in Nigeria, in Africa, and in our capacity to shape our own energy future,” Dangote stated, highlighting the group’s commitment to creating value for Nigerians through industrial development.
