Igbo Community in Lagos Bans Use of “Royal Highness” and “Royal Majesty” Titles

The Igbo Speaking Community in Lagos State has officially banned the use of the titles “Royal Highness” and “Royal Majesty” by all Ndieze (Igbo kings) crowned within the state. The announcement was made through a press release signed by the Chairman of the Board of Trustees, Dr. Jonathan Nnaji, and the President General, Chief Sunday Udeh, clarifying that these titles do not align with the community’s constitution.

The leadership emphasized that the community's constitution recognizes the title “Eze Ndigbo,” and instructed traditional rulers in Lagos who bear titles such as “Eze Ndigbo” to desist from using royal prefixes that are not sanctioned. They warned that any traditional ruler who continues to use “Royal Highness” or “Royal Majesty” would be acting contrary to the community’s rules and bear full responsibility for any resulting consequences.

Additionally, the community stated categorically that the title “Obi of Lagos” has no standing in the community’s constitution and is not recognized by the Igbo Speaking Community in Lagos. Any individual claiming to hold this title does so without official sanction and will similarly be held accountable.

The move comes as part of efforts to preserve Igbo culture, promote peaceful coexistence with host communities in Lagos, and uphold the laws and customs of Lagos State. The community also urged Igbo residents in Lagos to exercise caution in property transactions, advising verification of ownership to avoid losses from unlawful demolitions.

This decision underscores ongoing efforts by the Igbo community to maintain cultural integrity while adapting to the sociopolitical realities of living within a diverse metropolitan area. The leadership’s stance aims to clarify misunderstandings arising from the use of traditional titles and to promote unity among Igbo residents in Lagos.

The announcement has sparked conversations in social and traditional media, highlighting the complex interplay of culture, identity, and governance among minority communities in urban Nigerian contexts.
