NAFDAC Destroys Over ₦15 Billion Worth of Counterfeit, Expired Drugs in Ibadan

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has destroyed counterfeit, expired, banned, and substandard pharmaceutical products valued at over ₦15 billion at the Moniya dumpsite in Ibadan, Oyo State. The exercise, held on October 2, 2025, was witnessed by security and regulatory agencies, including the Nigeria Police Force, Department of State Services, Nigeria Customs Service, Federal Road Safety Corps, and Oyo State Ministry of Environment.

NAFDAC’s Director of Investigation and Enforcement, Dr. Martins Iluyomade, speaking on behalf of Director-General Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, said the destruction underscores the agency’s commitment to protecting Nigerians from harmful and fake products. The destroyed items included popular medicines such as Analgin, Cocodamol, codeine cough syrups, tramadol, oxytocin, falsified vaccines, and other unregistered or counterfeit drugs.

Prof. Adeyeye praised recent enforcement efforts that uncovered illegal consignments and cosmetic factories, commending the Nigeria Customs Service for transferring 25 containers of seized contraband drugs and products for destruction.

The agency reiterated its zero-tolerance policy on substandard products and urged Nigerians to report suspicious drugs to safeguard public health. NAFDAC called on community leaders, health professionals, and media outlets to raise awareness about the dangers posed by unauthorized vendors.
