Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has dismissed reports suggesting he intends to step aside for another presidential aspirant ahead of the 2027 elections. The clarification emerged following widespread speculation sparked by his recent interview with BBC Hausa, where misinterpretations of his comments led to claims that he might withdraw from the race.
Atiku's Media Adviser, Paul Ibe, released a statement emphasizing that a thorough review of the interview’s video and transcript confirmed Atiku neither expressed nor implied any intention to step down. Rather, Atiku welcomed the participation of younger candidates and expressed readiness to support any young aspirant who emerges victorious through a fair primary process within the African Democratic Congress (ADC), the party he recently joined.
The former Vice President’s stance underlines his commitment to a competitive and inclusive election, where youth and women are given priority. Atiku affirmed his determination to run for the presidency, rejecting insinuations that he may cede space to others without democratic contestation.
This clarification arrives in the context of Atiku positioning himself as a major contender poised to challenge the current administration in 2027 while advocating for a generational shift and stronger political coalitions in Nigeria.
