Peru’s Congress Removes President Dina Boluarte Amid Rising Crime and Scandals, Successor Vows War on Crime

Peru’s Congress voted overwhelmingly on October 10, 2025, to remove President Dina Boluarte from office, citing “permanent moral incapacity” due to scandals, corruption allegations, and surging crime rates. The move comes after months of intensified protests, political unrest, and growing public outrage over violence and gang-related crime across the country.

Boluarte, Peru's first female president, has faced low approval ratings between 2% and 4%, grappling with several corruption accusations and criticism over her government’s crackdown on protests following the 2022 ouster of former President Pedro Castillo. She did not attend the Congress session where the impeachment was finalized.

Following her removal, José Jerí, the leader of Congress, was sworn in as interim president. Jerí, 38, pledged to launch an aggressive campaign against organized crime and restore order in Peru. The country is currently without a vice president, making Jerí’s interim role crucial until elections are organized.

Boluarte’s impeachment adds to Peru’s recent history of political instability, with several presidents in the last two decades facing impeachment, resignation, or legal proceedings related to corruption and governance issues.

The political crisis has deeply affected Peru’s social fabric, especially in rural and indigenous communities that once supported Castillo but now face a complex future amid ongoing security challenges and demands for justice.
