A major disaster was averted on Sunday, October 25, 2025, when a Lexus SUV travelling at high speed collided with a fully loaded petrol tanker at Berger Suya, inward Mile 2 in Lagos. The impact caused the tanker to lose control and crash into several unregistered vehicles displayed along the highway setback.
Emergency response teams from the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, and other agencies quickly intervened to prevent what could have been a devastating explosion. LASTMA officials secured the scene, restricted vehicular movement, and supervised the safe transloading of the highly flammable petrol from the damaged tanker into another vehicle to eliminate the risk of ignition.
Lagos State Fire and Rescue personnel also flushed and neutralized spilled fuel while police officers maintained security and ensured order during the evacuation and transloading operation.
The Lexus driver sustained injuries and was taken into police custody for questioning, whereas the tanker driver fled the scene.
LASTMA General Manager Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki praised the prompt, coordinated response by all agencies involved, emphasizing the importance of road safety and calling on motorists to avoid reckless driving to prevent such accidents in the future.
The successful containment of the incident highlights the effectiveness of Lagos' emergency response system and ongoing efforts to safeguard lives and property.
