Tinubu Celebrates Nigeria's IMO Council Return After 14-Year Hiatus

President Bola Tinubu hailed Nigeria's election to Category C of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) Council for the 2026-2027 biennium as a strong endorsement of the nation's enhanced maritime stature and dedication to international shipping standards.

The victory at the IMO General Assembly in London on November 28 marks Nigeria's comeback to the executive body after a 14-year absence, last held in 2011, alongside 19 other nations focused on maritime interests and regional balance.

Tinubu linked the achievement to his administration's blue economy agenda, including maritime infrastructure growth, Gulf of Guinea anti-piracy measures, and ambitions to establish Nigeria as Africa's premier shipping hub.

He pledged active collaboration on safer seas, cleaner oceans, efficient transport, and equitable global regulations, thanking member states for their support. Marine and Blue Economy Minister Adegboyega Oyetola credited intensive diplomacy over 12 months for the 116-vote win.
