ECOWAS Suspends Guinea-Bissau Following Military Coup, Demands Restoration of Constitutional Order

The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has suspended Guinea-Bissau from all its decision-making bodies in response to the military coup that occurred on November 26, 2025.

The suspension was announced after an emergency virtual meeting of the ECOWAS Mediation and Security Council (MSC), which condemned the coup in the strongest terms and called for the unconditional restoration of constitutional order in Guinea-Bissau.

ECOWAS demanded the immediate release of detained civilian leaders, including President Umaro Sissoco Embalo, and urged the military authorities to ensure the safety and unhindered movement of citizens and international observers.

The bloc also rejected any arrangements that would undermine the democratic process or the will of the people following elections held on November 23, 2025. ECOWAS stated it would remain closely involved in the situation and reserved the right to apply all necessary measures, including sanctions, to restore democracy in Guinea-Bissau.
