On May 27, 2025, residents and youths of Abraka in Delta State staged a peaceful protest against the rising wave of kidnappings, police brutality, and extortion in their community. The demonstrators, including students and indigenes, took to the streets to demand urgent government action to address the insecurity that has plagued the area for months.
The protesters highlighted the frequent abductions and ransom demands that have terrorized families, with many victims held captive for days. They also condemned instances of police misconduct, including extortion and failure to protect citizens effectively.
In recent months, the Delta State Police Command has made several arrests related to kidnapping syndicates operating in the region, recovering millions of naira in ransom payments and weapons. Notably, eight suspected kidnappers were apprehended, and police continue to pursue other criminal gangs responsible for abductions in Abraka and neighboring communities.
Despite these efforts, residents remain fearful and frustrated, calling for more robust security measures and accountability from law enforcement agencies.
Similar protests have occurred previously, including a demonstration by over 60 women in Abraka in late 2024, underscoring ongoing community concerns about safety.
