TCN Adds 120MW to National Grid with New Transformers at Birnin Kebbi Substation

The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has announced the energization of two newly installed power transformers at its 330/132/33 kilovolt Birnin Kebbi Transmission Substation in Kebbi State, resulting in a 120 megawatt (MW) increase in bulk power capacity. The transformers, rated at 100 MVA and 150 MVA, were energized on June 27, 2025, boosting the substation’s capacity from 300 MVA to 450 MVA.

This upgrade enables the Kaduna Electricity Distribution Company to distribute an additional 120 MW of power to customers across Kebbi, Sokoto, and surrounding areas, while also ensuring stable bulk power supply to Niamey in Niger Republic. TCN’s spokesperson, Ndidi Mbah, emphasized the company’s commitment to expanding and maintaining the national transmission system to enhance efficiency and reliability in power delivery nationwide.

This development comes as part of ongoing efforts to strengthen Nigeria’s power infrastructure amid a national electricity generation capacity of approximately 5,148 MW as of April 2025. The upgrade at Birnin Kebbi is expected to improve power stability and support economic activities in the region.
