As Nigeria’s 2027 presidential elections draw closer, Arise Television’s News Director and Politics Editor, Sumner Sambo, has warned that the All Progressives Congress (APC) would be “joking” to underestimate the surging influence of the opposition African Democratic Congress (ADC) coalition.
Speaking on ‘The Morning Show’ on Monday, Sambo highlighted growing disaffection and internal issues plaguing the APC and cautioned the ruling party against complacency. He pointed out that many originally discounted the APC’s prospects during its formative years, only for it to eventually seize power. The same, he suggested, could happen with the fast-rising ADC if the APC continues to ignore shifting political tides.
“There is a lot of disaffection within the APC. The ADC has its own issues, those in the governing party should be very careful,” Sambo warned, urging party leaders to take opposition coalitions seriously.
DAILY MENTOR notes that the opposition coalition adopted ADC as its flagship party on July 2, 2025, and has since appointed prominent figures like former Senate President David Mark as national chairman and ex-Minister of Interior Rauf Aregbesola as national secretary. The move has injected new energy into Nigeria’s opposition ranks, triggering concern among the ruling party’s strategists.
The ADC’s swift consolidation has already rattled Nigeria’s political landscape, fueling predictions of a fiercely contested 2027 general election and raising the stakes for both the ruling and opposition parties.
