Factions Within Lagos APC Stage Protest at State Assembly, Demand Removal of Chairman Over Appointment Disputes

Deepening internal divisions within the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Lagos State erupted into a public protest at the gates of the Lagos State House of Assembly on Monday. Aggrieved APC members, mainly affiliated with the Mandate Group faction, gathered to demand fair appointments and the removal of the state party chairman, Cornelius Ojelabi.

The protesters accused the state leadership of imposing candidates and failing to respect grassroots party structures in making key appointments. They carried placards with slogans such as “Ojelabi Must Go,” signaling widespread dissatisfaction with the current party administration's style and decisions.

The unrest is linked to factional rivalry within the APC, with many members feeling marginalized and excluded from decision-making processes, fueling tensions ahead of critical political contests. The protest was peaceful but marked by vocal chants and calls for internal reforms.

The Lagos APC leadership has yet to issue an official response to the protest, which reflects broader challenges facing the ruling party in maintaining cohesion and managing competing interests in Africa's most populous state.

This demonstration at the state assembly underscores the urgent need for dialogue and transparent processes within the APC to address factional grievances and unify the party ahead of upcoming elections.
