The Paramount Ruler of Sankera, His Royal Highness Tor Sankera, David Sevav, has condemned the recent attack on St. Paul’s Parish, Aye-Twar, in Benue State, where the church was set ablaze by suspected armed Fulani militia. He called on both the Federal and Benue State Governments to ensure that those responsible are brought to justice swiftly.
Tor Sankera made his appeal during a solidarity visit to the Catholic Bishop of Katsina-Ala Diocese, Most Rev. Isaac Dugu, accompanied by members of the Sankera Traditional Council, local government chairmen, state lawmakers, and government officials.
Describing the attack as a desecration of a sacred space and a grievous affront to humanity, the monarch emphasized that the violence is not only an assault on the Church but also a test of leadership and the capability of security agencies to protect citizens.
“Justice and security for all citizens, irrespective of religion, must be guaranteed if peace and harmony are to thrive in our communities,” he stated.
Tor Sankera commended Bishop Dugu’s peacebuilding efforts, especially his rare outreach to bandits, and encouraged him to remain steadfast. He also appealed to the state government to rebuild the parish and strengthen security measures to allow displaced residents to return and worship freely.
The attack on St. Paul’s Parish has drawn widespread condemnation, highlighting the increasing insecurity in Benue State and the urgent need for effective government and security responses to protect vulnerable communities.
