Anambra State Governor, Chukwuma Soludo, has declared that the recent by-election results in the state confirm the failure of the Labour Party (LP) and the African Democratic Congress (ADC), describing both as “dead” and “non-existent” in Anambra.
Speaking at an event in Nanka to celebrate the ruling All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA)’s landslide victory in Saturday’s by-elections, Soludo emphasized that the ADC opposition coalition, which former presidential candidate Peter Obi backs, failed to gain traction in the state.
Soludo noted that APGA won decisively, with over 75 percent of votes cast in their favor, sweeping virtually all polling units and wards in the Anambra South Senatorial District and Onitsha North 1 Constituency. He remarked, “ADC does not exist in Anambra. We showed it yesterday. Labour Party is dead,” drawing cheers from APGA supporters.
The governorship hopeful under APGA criticized the opposition coalition for attempting to test its popularity through the by-elections, but said the people overwhelmingly endorsed APGA as their movement. The governor also took a direct dig at Peter Obi, noting that Obi’s constituency, Onitsha North 1, was firmly won by the APGA candidate.
Emmanuel Nwachukwu of APGA won the Anambra South Senatorial seat with 90,408 votes, defeating APC’s Azuka Okwuosa and ADC’s Donald Amangbo. Similarly, APGA’s Ifeoma Azikiwe won the Onitsha North 1 State Constituency seat, further cementing APGA’s dominance in the state.
Governor Soludo’s comments underscore APGA’s consolidation of power in Anambra ahead of the November 2025 governorship elections. Soludo, former Central Bank of Nigeria Governor, is seeking re-election and highlighted the by-election results as a strong endorsement of his leadership and APGA’s political strength in the region.
This announcement was made on August 17, 2025, following the official declaration of election results by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
The by-elections were seen as a critical test of opposition alliances headed by Peter Obi and the AD, but the results reinforce APGA’s control in Anambra State.
