Former Anambra State Governor and 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi has donated ₦10 million to Archbishop Charles Heerey College of Health Sciences and Technology, Nkpor (ACHCOHSTEN). The donation was made on Saturday during the college’s 20th anniversary celebration, which included matriculation and convocation ceremonies.
Obi highlighted the global shortage of health professionals and stressed the importance of training competent individuals to address this challenge. He encouraged students to see themselves as global citizens who can contribute to healthcare both within Nigeria and internationally. Obi praised the institution’s quality of training and recalled meeting graduates practicing abroad who proudly identified as products of ACHCOHSTEN during his tenure as governor.
The Provost of ACHCOHSTEN, Rev. Sr. Dr. Maria Uzochukwu Ozor, traced the institution’s growth from its 2005 beginnings as a School of Medical Laboratory Technicians to a full multi-departmental college. She commended Obi’s longstanding support, including previous donations of buses and building a female hostel. To date, ACHCOHSTEN has graduated over 700 health workers practicing globally in countries such as the US, UK, and Canada.
As part of the anniversary, Obi received an “Award of Excellence” for his contributions, and the college launched a commemorative book titled Growth and Wonder. The institution continues to serve as a vital hub for health sciences education, producing skilled professionals across a broad range of disciplines.
