On August 8, 2025, Governor Bala Mohammed of Bauchi State publicly invited Peter Obi, the 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate and former Governor of Anambra State, to return to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). Bala Mohammed, who is also Chairman of the PDP Governors Forum, emphasized the need for opposition parties to unite in order to effectively challenge the current administration, which he described as failing Nigeria on critical economic and social fronts.
During Obi’s visit to the Bauchi Government House, Bala Mohammed praised Obi for introducing a "new brand of politics" centered on constructive engagement, people-focused governance, and oversight. He highlighted Obi’s legacy in healthcare and education, acknowledging Obi’s past achievements as a governor and the clarity of his vision for Nigeria. Bala Mohammed stressed that Nigerian politics should transcend seasonal rituals and focus on empathetic leadership and strategic planning.
“Politics is not about sharing rice during Sallah or Christmas. It is about understanding where the shoe pinches and acting accordingly,” the governor said. He also reiterated that the opposition parties—PDP, ADC, SDP, and LP—must harmonize their interests for the good of Nigeria, warning that disunity only benefits the ruling party.
Obi, for his part, welcomed the call for collaboration, stressing that politics must become about development, competence, capacity, and compassion rather than personal gains. He thanked Bala Mohammed for the warm reception and underscored the importance of working together to resolve Nigeria’s challenges.
During his visit, Obi donated N15 million to two educational institutions in Bauchi State: N10 million to Malikiya College of Nursing Sciences and N5 million to Intisharu Taufizul Quranic Islamic School, reaffirming his commitment to education and healthcare. He spoke on the critical roles nurses and Islamic education play in societal progress, advocating for a blend of religious and conventional education.
Obi also engaged with student leaders on themes of youth leadership and reiterated his pledge to serve only one four-year presidential term if elected again, emphasizing that impactful service matters more than longevity in office.
This visit and invitation from Bala Mohammed come amid growing discussions and political realignments ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 general elections, highlighting growing momentum for a united opposition front.
