Punjab Government Saves ₹383 Crore on Road Repairs Using Artificial Intelligence

The Punjab government has successfully leveraged artificial intelligence (AI) technology to identify roads requiring repair, resulting in significant cost savings estimated at ₹383 crore. This achievement comes from combining videography with AI to assess the condition of various road stretches, allowing the government to avoid unnecessary repairs.

Initially, estimates showed that 3,369 link roads in Punjab required maintenance, projected at a cost of ₹1,557.58 crore. However, after deploying AI-enabled surveys, the actual number of roads needing repairs was reduced to 2,526, enabling substantial financial savings.

The AI process helped detect that several roads previously designated for repair either did not require it or had exaggerated repair estimates. A pilot project in Rupnagar and Nawanshahar districts demonstrated that field staff had been inflating repair costs. Using AI technology, savings of ₹60 crore were realized within these districts alone, prompting plans to extend AI-based assessments to all districts in Punjab.

This AI application complements other government initiatives to improve efficiency and transparency. Punjab’s Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann confirmed similar technology has also been introduced for optimizing goods and services tax (GST) collection and monitoring in sectors such as revenue, health, agriculture, and public works.

By embracing AI-driven solutions, Punjab is transforming public infrastructure management, reducing wastage of public funds, and setting an example for other regions aiming for smart governance through cutting-edge technologies.
