Tensions escalate in Benue State as the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria (MACBAN) accuses security operatives and vigilante groups of killing more than 70 cows and three rams belonging to its members across several local government areas. The group also alleges the disappearance of one of its members following an attack in Ohimini LGA.
MACBAN chairman Ando Risku Mohammed reported ongoing harassment and violent assaults on their communities since last week. He claimed significant livestock losses: 30 cows and three sheep in Ohimini, 22 cows in Katsina Ala, and 24 cows in Guma, alongside the missing herder.
Ohimini LGA chairman Adole Gabriel confirmed that the incident was formally reported and stated an investigation is underway, though the allegations have not yet been verified.
The Special Adviser to Governor Hyacinth Alia on Security, Joseph Har, defended state security forces, stressing that Civil Protection Guard operatives collaborate with police and military and denied their involvement in the killings.
Police spokesperson DSP Udeme Edet offered a contrasting account, confirming only one cow and one sheep killed in Ohimini and one Fulani man missing. She denied any reported killings in Katsina Ala, highlighting contrasting narratives.
