Nigeria’s Leaders Can’t Condemn Exam Cheating While Defending Fake Results - Mahdi Shehu

Activist Mahdi Shehu has criticized Nigerian leaders for condemning examination malpractice while simultaneously defending fake exam results. He argued that such contradictory positions damage the integrity of the education system and erode public trust.

Shehu highlighted the rising cases of sophisticated digital cheating during the 2025 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME), noting that over 6,000 results are under investigation for high-tech malpractice involving biometric fraud and hacking.

He called on government officials to take consistent and decisive actions against all forms of exam fraud instead of covering up unethical practices, which only perpetuates the problem.

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has acknowledged the challenges posed by evolving cheating methods and has set up a special committee to investigate and curb digital examination fraud.

Shehu’s comments come amid ongoing debates on protecting exam integrity and ensuring fair access to education for all Nigerian students.
