Political stakeholders have called on Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, and President Bola Tinubu to publicly disclose the agreements reached with Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara following his suspension and the state of emergency declared in March 2025.
The state of emergency was imposed amid political tensions and power struggles between Fubara and his predecessor, Wike, who is now the FCT Minister. This escalated to suspensions of Fubara, his deputy, and the Rivers State House of Assembly, with Vice Admiral Ibok-Ette Ibas appointed as a sole administrator.
In June 2025, Tinubu hosted a closed-door reconciliation meeting involving Fubara, Wike, suspended lawmakers, and key political figures, which resulted in an agreement to restore peace. Sources close to the presidency revealed that key terms include Fubara serving out his tenure without seeking re-election in 2027, withdrawal of impeachment proceedings, and Wike regaining influence over appointment of local government chairmen.
Stakeholders urge transparency on these agreements to instill confidence among Rivers residents and political actors, ensuring lasting peace and stability in the oil-rich state.
Governor Fubara is expected to resume full duties following the end of the six-month emergency rule in September 2025, marking a new political chapter for Rivers State after prolonged conflict.
