In a dramatic rescue operation in Lagos, a 55-year-old man who fell into an underground drainage channel along Ikorodu Road near Idiroko Bus Stop was successfully rescued alive. The incident happened early Saturday, October 25, 2025, when the man accidentally plummeted into the open manhole while walking along the busy road.
The Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service responded swiftly after receiving the distress call at about 12:24 p.m., deploying a team from the Ilupeju Fire Station. Using specialized equipment and confined-space rescue techniques, the firefighters managed to extract the man after a coordinated effort that lasted around two hours.
The rescued victim was immediately moved to a nearby hospital for medical evaluation and treatment. According to official records, he sustained no life-threatening injuries but was admitted for observation and dehydration treatment.
This incident underscores the ongoing risks posed by poorly maintained infrastructure and open drainage systems, which have caused numerous accidents, including deaths of pedestrians and motorists in Lagos.
Authorities continue to urge residents to report any faulty or exposed manholes and drains to prevent future tragedies. The Lagos State government has also promised to intensify maintenance and safety checks across the city to protect residents.
