Tragedy struck in Gombe State as five teenagers lost their lives in a boat mishap on the Nafada River on Saturday, October 25, 2025. The victims were identified as Najib Ibrahim (18), Hauwa'u Jidda Adamu Siddi Dogal (15), Ummati Haruna Baraya (16), Umaira Gidado (16), and Amina Jaliya (15), all residents of the Nafada community.

The boat accident occurred while they were traveling on the river, and despite rescue efforts, the young victims drowned, leaving families and the community in deep mourning. Gombe State Governor Muhammadu Yahaya expressed heartfelt condolences in a statement, calling the incident “heart-wrenching and painful,” and prayed for eternal rest for the deceased and strength for their families.

Governor Yahaya also called for strict enforcement of safety standards in water transportation, urging local government councils, community leaders, boat operators, and regulatory agencies to enhance safety awareness and prevent future tragedies in riverine areas.

This accident reflects broader safety challenges on Nigerian waterways, where overloaded vessels and insufficient safety measures frequently result in loss of lives, especially during the rainy season when conditions become hazardous.
