Thailand Mourns Passing of Queen Mother Sirikit at 93

Thailand’s Queen Mother Sirikit, a beloved royal figure known for her elegance and dedication to social causes, has died at the age of 93. The Royal Household Bureau announced her passing on Friday evening at a Bangkok hospital after a prolonged battle with a blood infection that began on October 17. Queen Sirikit was the wife of the late King Bhumibol Adulyadej, who reigned for seven decades until his death in 2016, and the mother of the current King Mahaajiralkorn.

Born on August 12, 1932, in Bangkok, Sirikit was deeply cherished by the Thai people. Her birthday was celebrated nationally as Mother’s Day in Thailand, reflecting her revered status as the "Mother of the Nation." During her lifetime, she championed numerous initiatives, including efforts to aid rural impoverished communities, preserve traditional craftsmanship, and protect the environment.

Despite being often overshadowed by her late husband and son, Queen Sirikit was a significant figure in her own right, with her image prominently displayed in homes, offices, and public places across the country. Her influence extended to humanitarian causes, such as assisting Cambodian refugees and safeguarding Thailand’s natural heritage.

In recent years, her health had declined, leading to fewer public appearances. Her passing marks the end of an era for Thailand’s monarchy, which holds a semi-divine status in Thai society. Her death has triggered a period of royal mourning, with the palace arranging a funeral of the highest honors. The queen’s body will be displayed for public viewing at the Grand Palace in Bangkok, allowing citizens to pay their respects.

While Queen Sirikit brought glamour and stability to Thailand’s postwar monarchy, her role occasionally intersected with the country’s turbulent politics. Rumors have circulated about her influence during times of military coups and protests, highlighting the complex position she held in Thai society.

As Thailand honors the memory of Queen Mother Sirikit, her legacy as a royal matriarch committed to the welfare of her people and the preservation of Thai culture endures.
