Senator Orji Kalu, representing Abia North, has reaffirmed his commitment to securing the release of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), following Kanu's life imprisonment sentencing by the Federal High Court in Abuja. Kalu emphasized that the issue requires a political solution alongside legal avenues.
Speaking on Channels Television's Sunday Politics program, Kalu disclosed he has been working closely with the federal government and relevant authorities, including plans to advise President Bola Tinubu and the Attorney General on resolving the matter. He highlighted the importance of strategic engagement with the Presidency, drawing from his past involvement during former President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration when Kalu played a role in the temporary release of Nnamdi Kanu in 2017.
Kalu urged calm and cautioned against emotional reactions, particularly among the Igbo people, stressing the need for patience and humility in seeking a resolution. He described the court's decision as a legal judgment to be respected while the appeals process unfolds.
Highlighting broader national challenges, Kalu condemned the role of foreign and local actors in fomenting insecurity aimed at destabilizing the government ahead of the 2027 elections. He expressed confidence in the current administration’s capacity to address security concerns and recover kidnapped victims, affirming that Nigeria remains resilient despite ongoing crises.
