The Imo State Commissioner of Police, CP Aboki Danjuma, has ordered a thorough investigation into the murder of Mr. Chibugo Amadi, a father of eight, who was allegedly killed by his kinsmen in Umuora village, Isiala Mbano LGA, following a land dispute.
The directive came after the family of the deceased submitted a petition to the police. The homicide section of the Command’s Criminal Investigation Department has been tasked with unraveling the circumstances surrounding the killing.
According to Mrs. Chinonye Amadi, the widow, the conflict began on April 3, 2025, when her husband had a disagreement with his younger brother, Ezemonye Amadi, over land. The dispute escalated into a fight, during which Chibugo injured his brother. Fearing retaliation, Chibugo fled the community.
In his absence, the kinsmen convened and imposed a fine of ₦850,000 on Chibugo, selling his four plots of land at a fraction of their value to pay compensation to his younger brother. Despite accepting these actions, Chibugo was lured back to the community under the pretense of a final settlement. Upon his return, he was allegedly forcefully taken to Mkpacha Umuora, where he was tortured and subsequently died.
Activist Chidiebube Okeoma, founder of Stand for Humanity Foundation, corroborated the widow’s account, stating that the assailants recorded the beating and shared the video on social media. After Chibugo collapsed, he was rushed to a hospital in Okwelle, where doctors confirmed his death. The suspects then fled, leaving his body in the morgue.
The Imo State Police Command spokesperson, Henry Okoye, has assured the public that justice will be served and that those responsible will be brought to book.
