CHAN 2024: Home-Based Super Eagles Fall 1-0 to Defending Champions Senegal

Nigeria's home-based Super Eagles (also known as Super Eagles B) suffered a narrow 1-0 defeat against the defending champions Senegal in their opening match of the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN) held at the Amaan Stadium in Zanzibar on August 5, 2025.

The match was tightly contested, with Nigeria dominating possession (59%) and completing more passes, but struggling to convert their superiority into goals. Senegal scored the only goal of the game through Christian Gomis in the 75th minute, capitalizing on a late defensive miscommunication by Nigeria.

The Nigerian team showed resilience and effort, including a strong defensive display by captain Junior Nduka and others, but ultimately could not break down Senegal’s defense. Nigeria received three yellow cards compared to Senegal’s one and committed more fouls (17). Both teams managed just one shot on target each.

This result places Nigeria at the bottom of Group D after Congo and Sudan played a 1-1 draw earlier. The Super Eagles will face Sudan next in a must-win clash to boost their hopes of advancing from the group stage.
